A great number of groups visiting Vienna, while not staying overnight in
our hotel, combine their stay with an excursion to Vienna Woods and a
lunch or a snack at Sophienalpe.
Chronic
The Sophienalpe was constructed by Emperor
Franz Joseph for his mother, the Duchess Sophie, as a rural summer residence and was renovated at the end of the last century as the
"Reststop Inn
and Dairy Farm Sophienalpe. From that time it became a popular destination
of the Viennese.
Formerly the Sophienalpe, situated at one
of the three Viennese hills, was reached by a cable railway built some 100
years ago. It was accessed from the Rieglerhütte by a lift system, the
first of its kind in the world.
The hotel was the meeting place of the
officers with their ladies, the lovelorn youth, the citizens and
nobility but, following a major blaze, almost all the buildings,
including the glass palace, were destroyed.
By 1912, the Sophienalpe was rebuilt and to this day maintains, in part,
its former appearance. Now, totally modernised, the Hotel-Restaurant
Sophienalpe, renowned for its excellent Viennese and International
cuisine and its wonderful setting amidst the Vienna Woods, remains a
favourite outing of the Viennese. Over the years it has become a
favourite port of call for more and more visitors to Vienna, both from
this country and abroad, who are seeking to combine a visit to the
cultural sights of Vienna with quiet relaxation and recreation.
Since 1957, the Sophienalpe has been in possession of the Allmayer
family and is operated as a family enterprise.
